The Youngers is guitar instrumental band founded in 1997 by schoolmates Mikko Vainonen and Heikki Telkkinen. Soon it was clear that they will concentrate on playing traditional rautalanka music despite their young age (14 at that time). Main influences that time were Finnish bands such as Quiets and Agents as well as The Shadows of the internationally famous ones. Soon Jarno joined the boys and now they could begin to play as a complete band.
After while The Youngers began to do gigs in South-Eastern Finland. Musical material at gigs that time were mainly Finnish classics with vocalist and instrumental as well. Vocal music has belonged in regular gig program since the very beginning, but main interest in recordings has been instrumental music.
Until January 2010 it has published 3 CD albums First (King of the Hill) in January 2005, second (Good Behaviour?) in January 2007 and third (Out of The border) in January 2010 including traditional Finnish and foreign songs as well as international big hits from past decades played in instrumental. Anyhow the foundation of the success of The Youngers, are the fresh songs written by M.Vainonen founder and solo guitarist of the band.
The band has gone over several changes in members but last four years it has remained the same. The four members are:
Mikko Vainonen, lead guitar
Jarno Väkevä, bass
Juho Pennanen, rythm guitar (vocals on gigs)
Matti Vainio, drums
The third album “Out of the Border” is good cross-section of the unique style and sound of The Youngers as well as it is representative of “new age rautalanka” music that has its own spirit but it still respects the roots of the Finnish guitar instrumental.
In the future after these three instrumental albums The Youngers will be concentrating to write vocal songs as well. But if we see back to our history, I bet that instrumental lovers don’t need to worry sure there will be something for them in the future as well.
